Tips to Make Your Home a Safer Place to Live
Even with an ADT-monitored home security system helping protect your home and family, you can also take extra
precautions by following some general home safety tips provided below for you and your family.
General Safety Tips
Don’t leave notes on the door
Do not leave notes on the door for service providers or family members. This may tell a burglar that you are not home.
Store valuables in a safe or safety deposit box
Store cash, jewelry, and other valuables in a safe or safety deposit box instead of leaving them scattered around the home.
Keep drapes and blinds shut
Keep drapes and blinds shut – especially in rooms where there is expensive equipment. Don't advertise the items in your home.
Window and Door Tips
Reinforce doorframes
Reinforce doorframes and place multiple locks on all outside doors.
Talk with a locksmith
For doors that have windows (or windowed frames) find different options to standard deadbolts. Talk with a locksmith to see what’s available.
Plant rosebushes or hedges
Plant rosebushes or hedges in front of any windows that may be susceptible to break-ins.
Home Safety When on Vacation
Put your TV or radio on a timer
Put your TV or radio on a timer, so it automatically goes on and off periodically throughout the day and night.
Get someone to watch your house
Ask a neighbor to watch your house. Better yet, hire a house sitter who can, while looking after your things, earn some money.
Keep sidewalk or walkway clear of snow
In the winter, have someone you know clear snow from your sidewalk or walkway. During the summer, keep the grass mowed while you're away.
